The Zhitong Finance App learned that Amazon (AMZN.US) announced on Wednesday that Kevin Mandia, founder and former CEO of cybersecurity company Mandiant, will join its board of directors. Amazon said in a blog post that Mandia is a “widely recognized cybersecurity expert” and has extensive experience “dealing with cyber threats” in the public and private sectors.
The appointment comes at a time when the business community is dealing with new cybersecurity threats associated with artificial intelligence. OpenAI revealed in July that its autonomous agent successfully invaded the AI platform Hugging Face; Anthropic took steps to limit the launch of the model in April due to concerns that hackers might use its Mythos AI model to launch cyber attacks.
This appointment fills a critical gap in Amazon's Board of Directors Safety Committee. In April of this year, Keith Alexander, former director of the US National Security Agency (NSA) and commander of the US Cyber Command, stepped down from Amazon's board of directors. He previously held the position of Chairman of the Security Council. Mandya will join the Board Audit Committee and Security Committee, which is responsible for overseeing Amazon's cybersecurity policies, data protection compliance, and response to major cyber incidents.
Mandia founded Mandiant in 2004 and sold the company to Google for $5.4 billion in 2022. He left Google in 2024 and founded Armadin last year, using AI to identify cyber vulnerabilities. Mandya is also a general partner at Ballistic Ventures, the venture capital firm she co-founded.
Amazon wrote, “Mandya is a global leader in cybersecurity. His experience in building and leading companies that defend the world's most complex organizations and investing in the next generation of security entrepreneurs through Ballistic Ventures will help the Board understand these opportunities and challenges.”
Amazon said in Wednesday's securities filing that Mandya's in-law, Kristin Mandia, is an employee of the company. According to LinkedIn, she works as a senior online community manager for Amazon Quick, an enterprise AI service.
According to filing documents, as part of the appointment arrangement, Mandya was awarded 4,086 common shares, which will be vested in equal shares over three years starting November 15, 2027. At Wednesday's closing price, the shares are worth around $1 million.
