Sanlorenzo (BIT:SL) Stock Hinges On Backlog Strength And Earnings Quality

Simply Wall St·09/09/2026 22:19:02
Listen to the news

Sanlorenzo closed at €39.04 on Wednesday, roughly flat over the past month, while quarterly headlines pointed in a different direction. The real story sits in profit quality. Q2 basic earnings per share came in at €0.76 on revenue of €273.96m, supported by a group net margin around 10.4%. That profitability, together with a trailing P/E of 12.6x against higher leisure peers, shifts the focus from today’s muted share move to the longer arc of how this luxury yacht builder is being priced for the coming years.

Sanlorenzo bull case: backlog, mix and cash discipline

Bulls argue that Sanlorenzo can compound through a rich backlog, higher value yachts and disciplined capital spending. H1 data largely backs that up. New yacht revenue of €471.3m with group net profit of €49.1m keeps net margin around 10.4%, slightly higher than last year, which points to stable earnings quality as scale increases. Mix is moving in the direction the thesis wants. Superyachts are now more than 32% of new yacht revenue and that line grew 12.4%, while the Yacht division above 30m and the new SL80A help pull the portfolio upmarket.

Order intake of €496m and a 1.1x H1 book to bill, tied to a €1.5b gross backlog that already covers roughly 83% of 2026 revenue guidance, supports the claim of visibility. Net cash of €49.4m and net working capital at 8.7% of revenue show that growth is not relying on balance sheet stretch.

Bear case: acquisition strain and demand plateau tested

Sceptics worry that Sanlorenzo depends too heavily on deals, faces demand fatigue in smaller boats and could struggle to digest growth. Early evidence is mixed. Nautor Swan adds €40.9m of sales and is now fully consolidated into EBITDA, yet management openly flags softer selling conditions in that sailing segment. That speaks directly to the concern that acquired units may underperform just when integration is most resource intensive. Weakness in small craft is visible too. Bluegame at €43.6m is broadly flat and tariffs on boats under 30m in the U.S. weigh on that bracket, which fits the idea of a plateau at the lower end.

On the other side, APAC and Americas revenue expanding by more than 30% and a book to bill above 1x argue against a broad demand slowdown or orderbook erosion, at least for larger yachts.

With earnings growth slowing toward mid single digits and Sanlorenzo leaning on a sizeable orderbook to justify its P/E discount, some investors will want to verify that liquidity, leverage and cash conversion genuinely stack up.
