The US White House issued an information note on Canada's tariff action. The statement pointed out that in order to deal with Canada's increasing commercial discrimination against the US, President Trump signed five notices under section 338 of the 1930 Tariff Act to impose import bans on some Canadian products and adjust previous tariff measures. In view of Canada's continuing discrimination in the field of alcohol and dairy products, the US side has taken targeted measures: prohibiting the import of Canadian alcohol and other products subject to the 50% tariff in section 338; prohibiting the import of Canadian dairy products and other products subject to the 50% tariff under section 338. Meanwhile, in order to reduce the burden on US companies and take into account the public interest, the US side adjusted the July 20 measures, including removing some products and adding new products. The above Section 338 tariffs apply to all regulated goods, regardless of whether they qualify as origin under the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement, and are levied in combination with Section 232 tariffs. The import ban will take effect on September 29, 2026, and the product adjustments will take effect on September 15.
