Asian copper stocks were higher. Previously, copper prices hit a record high, driven by weeks of rising prices, and the market expected Trump to impose tariffs on refined metal imports. The price of three-month futures on the London Metal Exchange rose 0.8% to hit $14,533 per tonne, then the increase narrowed. Supported by supply and demand, the metal has risen 17% this year. The market is still taking into account the possibility that tariffs will be imposed on primary copper imports, and copper prices have risen as a result. In the Australian market, Capstone Copper shares rose as much as 2%, and Sandfire Resources shares rose 0.6%. In the Japanese market, Sumitomo Metal Mining rose 2.4%, Mitsubishi Materials rose 1.6%, and JX Advanced Metals rose 3.7%.
