Listen to the news

Some GCM Grosvenor Inc. (NASDAQ:GCMG) shareholders may be a little concerned to see that the Chief Accounting Officer & MD of Finance in Chicago, Kathleen Sullivan, recently sold a substantial US$526k worth of stock at a price of US$13.16 per share. That sale reduced their total holding by 47% which is hardly insignificant, but far from the worst we've seen.

GCM Grosvenor Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Notably, that recent sale by Kathleen Sullivan is the biggest insider sale of GCM Grosvenor shares that we've seen in the last year. That means that even when the share price was slightly below the current price of US$13.27, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. We generally consider it a negative if insiders have been selling, especially if they did so below the current price, because it implies that they considered a lower price to be reasonable. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. It is worth noting that this sale was only 47% of Kathleen Sullivan's holding.

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. GCM Grosvenor insiders own about US$24m worth of shares. That equates to 0.9% of the company. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
