Amazon (AMZN.US) AWS expands government AI circuit! Big models such as OpenAI, Meta, and Anthropic collectively land on GovCloud

Zhitong Finance App learned that Amazon Web Services (AWS), Amazon's cloud business unit, recently announced that it has expanded the availability of AI models within the AWS GovCloud (US) region to provide government agencies with the ability to access large third-party models through the Amazon Bedrock platform, including mainstream models such as Anthropic, Meta, OpenAI, xAI, and Nvidia, while supporting Amazon's self-developed Nova series models. All services run in an isolated cloud environment that meets compliance requirements.

In a statement, AWS said, “We are pleased to announce that AWS GovCloud (US) is now providing multiple AI model families through Amazon Bedrock to provide government customers, their supporting industry base and technology partners with the artificial intelligence model choices they need to meet their mission requirements.”

Judging from financial performance, AWS is entering a strong growth cycle. In the second quarter of 2026, AWS achieved revenue of US$42.2 billion, a year-on-year increase of 36.7%, the fastest growth rate in 18 quarters since 2021; operating profit was approximately US$16.6 billion, a sharp increase of 63% year-on-year, and the operating margin reached 39.4%. AWS currently contributes about 21% of Amazon's total revenue, yet contributes more than 60% of Amazon's operating profit.

The annual revenue operating rates of AWS's AI business and self-developed chip business have each exceeded 25 billion US dollars, and both have recorded three-digit percentage growth. The model hosting platform Bedrock already has hundreds of thousands of customers, and customer spending on Bedrock in a single quarter in the second quarter of 2026 exceeded the cumulative value of all previous quarters. Meanwhile, AWS's backlog (Backlog) reached a record high of $496 billion in the second quarter.

The company's management predicts that the future revenue scale of AWS is expected to reach the level of 1 trillion US dollars, yet 85% of global IT spending is still deployed in local data centers. Amazon has promised to invest up to $50 billion in 2026 to add about 1.3 gigawatts of AI and high-performance computing capacity in several secure cloud regions in the US (including AWS GovCloud, AWS Secret, and AWS Top Secret).

In August of this year, AWS GovCloud (US) just celebrated its 15th anniversary. As the world's first cloud region built specifically for the US government's security and compliance needs, AWS GovCloud has grown into an operational cornerstone supporting critical tasks such as US national security, energy, public health, and financial services since its launch in 2011. From processing the “Curiosity” Mars exploration data by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory to providing real-time orbital analysis calculations for the “Artemis 2” lunar mission, AWS GovCloud has always carried demanding workloads.
