At 0:48 today, China's first dedicated satellite for energy engineering, the “Electric Construction 1” synthetic aperture radar satellite, passed through the Geelong Port disaster area in Tibet and successfully obtained the first batch of radar remote sensing images of the Geelong port disaster area after the disaster occurred. Preliminary interpretation suggests that the source of this disaster may be in an alpine ice and snow area on the Nepalese side, about 10 kilometers east of the port. At about 10:30 on August 26, a serious landslide disaster occurred on the Nepalese side, affecting the Geelong port in Shigatse, Tibet, causing disruptions in roads, communications, electricity, and loss of connections. Images showed signs of suspected mudslide washing on the east and west sides of the G216 National Highway on the east and west sides of the port. The river widened markedly, and houses and roads along the coast were covered with sediment, which confirms the description of the disaster situation. At present, the first batch of images and interpretation results have been simultaneously provided to more than 10 organizations, including the National Disaster Mitigation Center of the Ministry of Emergency Management, the Land Satellite Remote Sensing Application Center of the Ministry of Natural Resources, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. China Power Construction Chengdu Institute will continue to carry out follow-up observations and keep a close eye on the risk of secondary disasters.
