The Toronto-based bank said it had earnings of $1.96 per share. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs, were $1.98 per share.

The results beat Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of three analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $1.74 per share.

The retail and wholesale bank posted revenue of $20.45 billion in the period. Its revenue net of interest expense was $12.1 billion.
