Listen to the news

Insiders who acquired HK$3.64m worth of Yee Hop Holdings Limited's (HKG:1662) stock at an average price of HK$2.80 in the past 12 months may be dismayed by the recent 11% price decline. Insiders invest with the hopes of seeing their money grow in value over time. However, as a result of recent losses, their initial investment is now only worth HK$598.0k, which is not what they expected.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

Yee Hop Holdings Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by Executive Chairman of the Board Yin Kwan Jim for HK$2.6m worth of shares, at about HK$2.64 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to buy, even at a higher price than the current share price (being HK$0.46). While their view may have changed since the purchase was made, this does at least suggest they have had confidence in the company's future. To us, it's very important to consider the price insiders pay for shares. As a general rule, we feel more positive about a stock when an insider has bought shares at above current prices, because that suggests they viewed the stock as good value, even at a higher price. Yin Kwan Jim was the only individual insider to buy during the last year.

Yin Kwan Jim purchased 1.30m shares over the year. The average price per share was HK$2.80. The chart below shows insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year. If you want to know exactly who sold, for how much, and when, simply click on the graph below!

Insider Ownership

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Yee Hop Holdings insiders own about HK$162m worth of shares (which is 68% of the company). Most shareholders would be happy to see this sort of insider ownership, since it suggests that management incentives are well aligned with other shareholders.

What Might The Insider Transactions At Yee Hop Holdings Tell Us?

There haven't been any insider transactions in the last three months -- that doesn't mean much. On a brighter note, the transactions over the last year are encouraging. It would be great to see more insider buying, but overall it seems like Yee Hop Holdings insiders are reasonably well aligned (owning significant chunk of the company's shares) and optimistic for the future.
