ARB (ASX:ARB) Shares Drift As Margin Pressure Clouds Global Growth

Simply Wall St·08/26/2026 14:22:57
Listen to the news

ARB stock came into the FY26 result with a solid recent run, up about 12% over the past month, and closed at A$20.56 on Wednesday. The report itself was more sober. Revenue for the year was A$702 million and profit after tax was A$92.4 million, with basic earnings per share at A$1.11.

The headline story is a margin squeeze. Profit before tax declined faster than sales, dividend payments were heavy and net cash stepped down. For short term traders that combination can feel uncomfortable. Long term investors will be more focused on how ARB balances its clean balance sheet with the pressure on earnings quality.

Is ARB a quietly undervalued compounder at A$20.56, or is the 18.6x P/E with soft margins a sign of overpaying? Compare the current market price to our detailed valuation analysis for ARB

ARB bullish thesis: global growth and margin repair

Bulls argue ARB can offset a pressured Australian 4x4 market with export growth, OEM wins and a stronger U.S. platform. The latest year gives partial support. Group revenue fell 3.8%, yet exports were flat to slightly higher at A$268.4m and the Americas grew double digit, with the U.S. up about 13.5% in local currency. That lines up with the story that international channels are gaining weight. Gross margin recovered in the second half, helped by FX and mid single digit price rises, and management expects FY27 margins roughly in line with FY26. This suggests earlier margin damage from FX and mix is not getting worse for now. OEM revenue dropped 27.2%, but management attributes this to timing and points to new U.S. platforms in the pipeline. That is a milestone delayed rather than broken, but it still needs proof through future OEM volumes.

ARB bearish thesis: niche risk and sustained margin squeeze

Bears worry that ARB’s 4x4 focus, rising compliance and cost pressure and low cost competitors will steadily erode earnings quality. The FY26 numbers give those concerns some traction. Group revenue contracted 3.8% and profit before tax fell 8.9%. Underlying PBT declined about 10.5%, which confirms operating leverage works against shareholders when volumes soften. Australian aftermarket revenue slipped 3.3% and still accounts for more than half of sales, so the business remains tied to a cyclical domestic niche. OEM revenue fell 27.2% and is yet to play the stabilising role that the bullish story suggests. Management is lifting engineering spend by 10 to 15% per year and CapEx reached A$36.6m, which increases fixed cost. The second half margin recovery and flat full year net margin help, but they do not yet disprove the concern that any future cost or FX shock could quickly compress profitability again.

After a year in which profit fell faster than revenue and fixed costs increased, it is worth asking whether ARB’s earnings pressure is fully visible. Review our independent risk analysis for ARB which shows 1 important warning sign
