According to South Korea's “Chosun Ilbo”, South Korea's DRAM export prices continue to soar, and AI-powered HBM production is squeezing the supply of ordinary memory. The data shows that from the 1st to the 20th of this month, the unit price of South Korea's DRAM exports reached US$921.83 million per kilogram, up 401% year on year and about 12.5 times higher than the low in January 2023. Goldman Sachs expects the DRAM supply gap to expand from 5.0% this year to 5.9% next year, and believes that “the HBM and high-capacity server DRAM required for AI servers are absorbing limited production capacity, leading to a further tightening of the supply of ordinary DRAM.” TrendForce expects that by the end of next year, Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron will account for 30% of the total DRAM wafer input for HBM production, but HBM will only account for about 13% of the actual DRAM bit supply. Memory vendors warn that tight DRAM and NAND supply driven by AI demand may continue beyond 2027. SK Hynix said that from the supply-side perspective, 2027 could be “the worst shortage year in the history of the memory industry.” Goldman Sachs anticipates that the supply shortage may continue until 2028.
