On the afternoon of August 24, local time, early this morning Beijing time, US Treasury Secretary Bezent announced a number of economic sanctions against Iran to further increase pressure on Iran. The Trump administration announced that it will expand the scope of secondary sanctions and will impose sanctions on entities and countries that still maintain commercial dealings with Iran around the world. At the press conference, Bezent unveiled what he called “economic Normandy” operation. Bezent said, “We are launching an economic onslaught against Iran's global financial network. Our goal is to cut off every economic lifeline that supports this regime until Tehran is isolated.” The US Treasury Department said it “has identified the networks, intermediaries and financial channels used by Iran to smuggle oil and evade sanctions,” and said it will join forces with partners to crack down on any source of “illegal revenue” in Iran. The US Treasury Department said it has issued sanctions against the five major areas used by the Iranian regime to support the economy — digital assets, technology, gold, aviation, and shipping. The US Treasury also imposed sanctions on nearly 60 entities, individuals, and ships.
