01:40 AM EDT, 08/24/2026 (MT Newswires) -- The Saudi Ministry of Finance is considering a state-backed insurance scheme to provide war and political risk cover for vessels in the region amid escalating conflict. London's Financial Times reported Monday, citing unnamed sources, that the country's ministry has discussed certain plans with London-based brokers. One of the plans would establish a pool scheme offering ships and marine cargo assets with cheaper insurance through insurers and reinsurers, with additional funds available through the state-owned Saudi Export-Import Bank, or Saudi EXIM. Under one version of the plan, Saudi Reinsurance (SASE:8200), d/b/a Saudi Re, and Riyadh Re would lead a group of participating reinsurers. Representatives of the Saudi Insurance Authority, Saudi Ministry of Finance, Saudi EXIM, Saudi Re and Riyadh Re did not immediately respond to requests for comment from MT Newswires.
