Last week, Killi Resources Limited (ASX:KLI) insiders, who had purchased shares in the previous 12 months were rewarded handsomely. The shares increased by 11% last week, resulting in a AU$7.5m increase in the company's market worth, implying a 65% gain on their initial purchase. In other words, the original AU$242.7k purchase is now worth AU$400.9k.
While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.
Notably, that recent purchase by Neville Power is the biggest insider purchase of Killi Resources shares that we've seen in the last year. We do like to see buying, but this purchase was made at well below the current price of AU$0.29. Because the shares were purchased at a lower price, this particular buy doesn't tell us much about how insiders feel about the current share price.
Killi Resources insiders may have bought shares in the last year, but they didn't sell any. Their average price was about AU$0.18. We don't deny that it is nice to see insiders buying stock in the company. However, we do note that they were buying at significantly lower prices than today's share price. Over the last three months, we've seen significant insider buying at Killi Resources. Non-Executive Chair Neville Power spent AU$199k on stock, and there wasn't any selling. This is a positive in our book as it implies some confidence.
Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. It appears that Killi Resources insiders own 32% of the company, worth about AU$24m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
It's certainly positive to see the recent insider purchase. And the longer term insider transactions also give us confidence. But we don't feel the same about the fact the company is making losses. Insiders likely see value in Killi Resources shares, given these transactions (along with notable insider ownership of the company). While it's good to be aware of what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision. Be aware that Killi Resources is showing 4 warning signs in our investment analysis, and 2 of those can't be ignored...
