Chery will establish a passenger car R&D center in the UK to further expand its business in the UK market. Gary Lan, CEO of Chery International UK, said in a statement on Wednesday: “This R&D center is the next step in our long-term plan for the UK. Our goal is more than just selling cars to the UK.” Chery said the R&D center will be officially put into operation in late autumn. According to a non-legally binding memorandum of understanding, Nissan plans to start manufacturing Chery Group models at the Sunderland plant next year. The new R&D center is located in Bedfordshire. The region is a gathering place for the engineering technology and motorsports industry, and is home to many automotive R&D institutions. Research and development work will mainly focus on adapting vehicles to road conditions in the UK, and will also cover autonomous driving and artificial intelligence technology in the long term. Chery said it plans to recruit local talents for a long time and rely on the R&D center to create a large number of highly skilled jobs.
