Origin Energy stock closed at A$12.07 on Friday, sitting on solid short term gains after a strong run into the FY26 result. The market has been treating Origin Energy as a value play with a modest growth story. The latest earnings put hard numbers around that view.
The headline is earnings power. Trailing net profit margin sits at 10.1% with underlying profit for FY26 at A$1.159b and group underlying EBITDA at A$3.22b. Yet the stock still trades on a P/E of 13.2x, which is below both industry and peer averages. That gap is what investors now need to reassess.

Bulls argue Origin Energy can fund the transition and digital growth from dependable domestic cash flow and a resilient LNG base. FY26 gives that view some support. Energy Markets EBITDA of A$1,701m with electricity gross profit above the stated A$25 to A$40/MWh medium term range shows the core Australian utility engine is doing the heavy lifting. Cost to serve fell A$126m while customer accounts grew 243,000, which backs the narrative of scale plus efficiency rather than growth at any price. LNG through APLNG still returned A$911m in dividends and reported higher 2P reserves, so the cash pillar is intact. Octopus and Kraken together are close to breakeven at about A$8m of EBITDA loss with U.K. retail already profitable, which keeps the growth optionality argument alive rather than purely aspirational.
The bear view focuses on transition risk, execution drag and capital intensity that could pressure Origin Energy margins over time. FY26 does not dismiss those concerns. Statutory profit of A$1.574b sits beside guidance for higher APLNG capex of about A$3.0b to A$3.3b and management is already flagging lower LNG trading gains in FY27. That points to heavier spend just as one helpful earnings tailwind may ease. Management also kept the dividend flat at A$0.60 despite higher free cash flow, citing working capital swings and a wish to stay at the low end of the net debt range. That restraint supports balance sheet strength yet also signals that large batteries, VPPs and Octopus or Kraken rollout are still significant cash calls, not yet clear sources of incremental equity value.
