On August 14, the South China Sea Bureau of the Ministry of Natural Resources officially issued the “2025 South China Sea Marine Ecological Warning and Monitoring Notice” and the “2025 South China Sea Marine Ecological Protection and Restoration Notice”. According to the “Early Warning and Monitoring Bulletin”, the marine ecological situation in the South China Sea region is generally stable in 2025. The water environment and biodiversity in coastal waters fluctuate throughout the year and remain generally stable. Mangroves and seagrass bed ecosystems are in excellent overall condition. The mangrove forest cover is over 75%, the vegetation community is stable, and the level of biodiversity is high, forming a “Great Green Maritime Wall” stretching thousands of miles. The state of coral reefs and coastal salt marshes ecosystems is mainly moderate, and the coverage of living corals has increased in all monitored regions. Ecosystems in estuaries and bays are generally stable, and the overall ecological condition of the Nansha islands and reefs in central west China is excellent. According to the “Protection and Restoration Bulletin”, in 2025, the Nanhai region implemented 66 marine ecological restoration projects, with a total investment of nearly 5 billion yuan. By the end of 2025, the Nanhai region had defined a total marine ecological protection red line area of about 2.66 million hectares and a marine nature reserve area of about 7 million hectares.
