Santanu Sengupta, chief Indian economist at Goldman Sachs Group, said on Friday that India's labor force is unlikely to experience large-scale unemployment due to artificial intelligence, but some jobs in the service sector may be affected. In an interview, Sengupta said that compared to many other countries, the impact of artificial intelligence on India will be limited. He said, “The main reason is that India's labor force is huge, and a large number of workers are engaged in mechanical or manual work.” He said that the construction industry and retail industry absorb about 40% of India's labor force. “Currently, it is basically unaffected by artificial intelligence; the service sector is mainly affected.” Goldman Sachs estimates that if the application of artificial intelligence is promoted in an orderly manner, the impact is expected to be mitigated, while overall productivity may increase by 0.4 percentage points in the next ten years.
