Cavvy Energy (TSX:CVVY) Stock Faces Valuation Questions After Cash Flow Surge

Simply Wall St·08/13/2026 22:53:05
Listen to the news

Cavvy Energy stock has slipped about 1% over the past week and still trades near CA$1.90, even after a punchy Q2 earnings print that turned a lot of heads. The market move has been muted so far. The headline is much louder. Net operating income in Q2 landed near CA$50 million and funds flow from operations hit about CA$42 million, driven by record sulfur pricing and stronger midstream fees.

For short term traders, the reaction might look underwhelming. For anyone thinking in years rather than days, the real story is the step change in cash generation and what that could mean for debt reduction and future optionality.

Is Cavvy Energy at CA$1.90 being priced as a turnaround winner or an expensive outlier, given a 73.4x trailing P/E and a much higher DCF fair value in the dataset? Compare those signals directly in the valuation analysis for Cavvy Energy

Cavvy Energy bull case hinges on cash mix shift

Bulls argue Cavvy Energy is turning into a more resilient cash machine, less tied to spot AECO and more driven by sulfur and fee revenue. Q2 backs parts of that up. Funds flow from operations reached about CA$42 million with operating netback of CA$25.38/boe, supported by realized gas pricing of CA$2.81/GJ versus AECO near CA$1.52/GJ and sulfur at CA$478/ton. Third party processing volumes of roughly 152 MMcf/d and a customer extension into mid 2027 add visibility to midstream fees. Debt repayments of about CA$76.5 million year to date and a lower year end debt range suggest Phase 2 deleveraging milestones are being hit. The raised 2026 net operating income guidance also matches the narrative that sulfur contracts and midstream growth are now moving the profit needle, not just commodity swings.

Cavvy Energy bear case flags concentration and durability

Bears focus on whether Q2 is repeatable and whether Cavvy Energy is overexposed to sulfur and concentrated assets. That concern is not fully eased. Record sulfur pricing clearly supported the quarter and royalties of CA$88.2 million rose with that uplift. The current sulfur forward and prepayments are time limited, and only about half of 2027 sulfur is hedged, so pricing risk remains once contracts roll. Production was about 21,500 boe/d with Waterton downtime and an extra outage in July, which shows how a crack at one plant can trim volumes and force higher maintenance capital. Management has lifted 2026 capital to CA$52 million to CA$57 million, in part to fix and fortify these hubs. Debt is falling, but refinancing and 2027 maturities still sit ahead, so the balance sheet story is not finished.
