Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) has announced the commercial operation of Coalburn 1, a significant milestone in Europe's energy transition. This 500 MW, two-hour lithium-ion battery energy storage system (BESS) located in South Lanarkshire, Scotland, is now the largest operational battery in Europe. The Coalburn 1 project, along with Coalburn 2 and Devilla, forms part of CIP's extensive energy infrastructure investments in the UK, providing a combined 1.5 GW of power capacity and 3 GWh of energy storage. This development supports the integration of renewable energy, enhances the flexibility and resilience of the UK power system, and contributes to cost reductions for consumers.
