The Zhitong Finance App learned that on August 11, CME Group (CME Group) announced that it will extend the trading hours of its 100 oz silver futures contract to 24/7 trading 7 days a week, 24 hours a day (24/7) from September 11, 2026. The plan is yet to be approved by the regulatory authorities.

This means that after gold, CME's all-weather trading mechanism will further cover silver, a variety with both precious metal and industrial metal properties, affecting investors in the global precious metals market, traders across time zones, and companies in the silver industry chain with hedging needs.

Previously, CME launched 24-hour all-weather trading of 1 oz gold futures on July 24. Since the launch of all-weather trading for 1-ounce gold futures on July 24, the new weekend trading period has sold more than 53,000 contracts, with a nominal value of about US$219 million, making it the most liquid market for gold futures weekend trading.

Regarding this expansion to Silver, Jin Hennig, managing director of CME Group and global head of the metals business, said that Baiyin connects the two worlds of precious metals and industrial metals. For investors, it is both a diversified configuration tool and at the same time responding to macroeconomic news and physical needs. Retail customers have shown strong demand for 1 oz gold futures to be traded anytime they need it, so now the same round-the-clock trading rights are extended to Silver to help participants manage risk and seize opportunities.

According to CME, silver has the properties of both a precious metal and an industrial metal, and can help investors cope with macroeconomic changes and fluctuations in physical demand. Under the all-weather trading mechanism, investors across time zones can respond to sudden macroeconomic news and changes in physical demand during the Asian and European periods and weekends, and industrial chain enterprises can also hedge more flexibly.
