The excitement of investing in a company that can reverse its fortunes is a big draw for some speculators, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can manage to find investors. Sometimes these stories can cloud the minds of investors, leading them to invest with their emotions rather than on the merit of good company fundamentals. A loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the inflow of external capital may dry up.
If this kind of company isn't your style, you like companies that generate revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Louis (CSE:LUI). Even if this company is fairly valued by the market, investors would agree that generating consistent profits will continue to provide Louis with the means to add long-term value to shareholders.
In the last three years Louis' earnings per share took off; so much so that it's a bit disingenuous to use these figures to try and deduce long term estimates. So it would be better to isolate the growth rate over the last year for our analysis. Outstandingly, Louis' EPS shot from €0.0085 to €0.015, over the last year. It's a rarity to see 79% year-on-year growth like that.
Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. Louis maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 8.3% to €139m. That's a real positive.

Louis isn't a huge company, given its market capitalisation of €54m. That makes it extra important to check on its balance sheet strength.
Many consider high insider ownership to be a strong sign of alignment between the leaders of a company and the ordinary shareholders. So those who are interested in Louis will be delighted to know that insiders have shown their belief, holding a large proportion of the company's shares. Indeed, with a collective holding of 71%, company insiders are in control and have plenty of capital behind the venture. This makes it apparent they will be incentivised to plan for the long term - a positive for shareholders with a sit and hold strategy. With that sort of holding, insiders have about €38m riding on the stock, at current prices. That's nothing to sneeze at!
Louis' earnings per share growth have been climbing higher at an appreciable rate. This level of EPS growth does wonders for attracting investment, and the large insider investment in the company is just the cherry on top. The hope is, of course, that the strong growth marks a fundamental improvement in the business economics. So based on this quick analysis, we do think it's worth considering Louis for a spot on your watchlist. Even so, be aware that Louis is showing 3 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those is concerning...
