It's common for many investors, especially those who are inexperienced, to buy shares in companies with a good story even if these companies are loss-making. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.' Loss making companies can act like a sponge for capital - so investors should be cautious that they're not throwing good money after bad.
So if this idea of high risk and high reward doesn't suit, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like TA (SGX:PA3). Even if this company is fairly valued by the market, investors would agree that generating consistent profits will continue to provide TA with the means to add long-term value to shareholders.
If a company can keep growing earnings per share (EPS) long enough, its share price should eventually follow. Therefore, there are plenty of investors who like to buy shares in companies that are growing EPS. TA's shareholders have have plenty to be happy about as their annual EPS growth for the last 3 years was 45%. While that sort of growth rate isn't sustainable for long, it certainly catches the eye of prospective investors.
It's often helpful to take a look at earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. TA shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 23% to 33%, and revenue is growing. That's great to see, on both counts.

TA isn't a huge company, given its market capitalisation of S$56m. That makes it extra important to check on its balance sheet strength.
Seeing insiders owning a large portion of the shares on issue is often a good sign. Their incentives will be aligned with the investors and there's less of a probability in a sudden sell-off that would impact the share price. So as you can imagine, the fact that TA insiders own a significant number of shares certainly is appealing. Indeed, with a collective holding of 80%, company insiders are in control and have plenty of capital behind the venture. This should be seen as a good thing, as it means insiders have a personal interest in delivering the best outcomes for shareholders. In terms of absolute value, insiders have S$45m invested in the business, at the current share price. That's nothing to sneeze at!
TA's earnings have taken off in quite an impressive fashion. That sort of growth is nothing short of eye-catching, and the large investment held by insiders should certainly brighten the view of the company. At times fast EPS growth is a sign the business has reached an inflection point, so there's a potential opportunity to be had here. So at the surface level, TA is worth putting on your watchlist; after all, shareholders do well when the market underestimates fast growing companies. Even so, be aware that TA is showing 2 warning signs in our investment analysis , you should know about...
