According to reports, Kim Yong-beom, director of the policy department of the South Korean President's Office, is accused of abusing authority, coercion, and obstruction of business on suspicion of promoting the listing of leveraged ETFs linked to a single semiconductor stock. The relevant criminal report has already been officially submitted. These single-share leveraged ETFs are believed to have increased market volatility and caused investors to lose billions of dollars. Lee Jong-bae, a conservative former Seoul city councilor supported by the opposition National Power Party, said he had submitted a criminal lawsuit against Kim Yong-beom to the Supreme Public Prosecutor's Office through the government's online petition system on Monday. Lee Jong-bae believes that Kim Yong-beom actually instructed the financial supervisory authorities to consider launching a leveraged ETF product linked to a single chip stock. Lee Jong-bae also claimed that the Korea Financial Services Commission has been internally reviewing a plan since January to establish the necessary regulatory framework and system in the second quarter and then launch these products in the second half of the year. Lee Jong-bae said, “Without Kim Yong-beom's instructions, the financial supervisory authorities would not hastily launch a leveraged ETF linked to a single semiconductor stock on the eve of the election, despite serious market risk warnings.”
