Cactus (WHD) Stock Rallies As Profit Strength Meets Margin Compression

Simply Wall St·08/02/2026 02:22:23
Listen to the news

Cactus came into this earnings season as a high expectation oilfield equipment stock with a rich P/E and a reputation for strong growth. The market liked what it saw. The share price jumped about 4.9% to roughly US$65 after the Q2 report, even with recent concern around shrinking net profit margins.

The headline this quarter is profitability. Cactus delivered Q2 revenue of about US$450m and adjusted earnings per share of US$0.93 from net income of US$61m. For a stock already priced well above many energy services peers, that level of earnings power is what investors were looking for.

Cactus Bull Story: Growth Engines Hitting Key Milestones

Bulls argue Cactus can turn energy security themes and acquisitions into durable, high quality growth. Q2 gives that view real footing. Pressure Control revenue of about US$344m with a roughly 29% group EBITDA margin shows the enlarged platform is operating with healthy profitability while the Baker Hughes Surface Pressure Control assets are integrated. Management has already raised first year annualized synergy targets from US$15m to US$20m, which is a concrete milestone on the acquisition thesis. Spoolable Technologies delivered US$106m of revenue with strong margins and is guided to grow 15% to 20% in Q3, backed by more than US$80m of fresh international orders in July. That order momentum, plus plans to expand Baytown and consider an Eastern Hemisphere facility, directly supports the idea that spoolable pipe and international exposure can become larger, more diversified legs of the Cactus story.

Bear Case: Margin Pressures And Execution Risks Not Resolved

Bears focus on margin fragility, concentration in Vietnam, and execution risk around large projects and the Baker Hughes deal. Q2 does not dismiss those concerns. Trailing net profit margin of 6.0% versus 16.2% a year earlier shows material compression, even in a quarter with tariff refunds of about US$10m and strong revenue. Management still describes a heavy U.S. tariff burden, with stacked rates near 75% on some China imports, and is relying on sourcing shifts to Vietnam and supplier concessions to offset it. That keeps manufacturing and certification execution firmly in the spotlight. Guidance for about a 10% sequential decline in Pressure Control revenue in Q3 as Middle East shipments normalize underlines ongoing project timing risk. Higher 2026 capex of US$55m to US$65m, plus the complexity of integrating Cactus International, means the acquisition thesis still needs further proof that returns will outweigh these pressures.
