Vallourec walked into this earnings week with a stock that has drifted, down about 19% over the past three months and slightly weaker over the last week, even as expectations for the company’s earnings profile stayed upbeat. The immediate question for you is whether today’s reaction is emotion chasing recent price weakness or a cooler read on fresh numbers.
The headline this quarter is not the income statement. It is the balance sheet. Q2 delivered $190 million of EBITDA and $125 million of adjusted free cash flow, and the company finished the period with $183 million of net cash, its strongest cash position since 2009.

The constructive thesis on Vallourec is that a higher quality Tubes mix, disciplined CapEx and a more focused portfolio will support strong margins and cash returns while funding growth in new energy and offshore projects. Q2 gives some firm milestones on that score. Group EBITDA margin held at 21.4% and Tubes EBITDA reached US$176 million with US$722 per tonne, which points to resilient economics even as international volumes were softer. Mine & Forest posted US$33 million of EBITDA at a 36% margin, which supports the value over volume angle, although management now guides FY sold volumes to 5.0 to 5.5 mt, so throughput is being managed carefully.
The balance sheet piece of the bull case is clearly on track. Net cash of US$183 million and over US$2b in liquidity, alongside US$125 million of adjusted free cash flow in Q2, underpin the enlarged 2026 capital return plan without relying on unproven growth in new energies yet.
Compare Vallourec’s move to net cash and its 21.4% Group EBITDA margin with where institutional expectations are sitting. See the consensus price target analysis for VallourecThe core worry from bears is that Vallourec is promising heavy 2026 buybacks and dividends just as it needs cash for Mine & Forest expansion, offshore coating capacity and New Energies projects. Q2 net cash of US$183 million and liquidity above US$2b clearly weaken arguments about immediate balance sheet strain. However, the company is still running with a relatively tight annual CapEx envelope, and Phase 2 at the mine does not arrive until 2027. That supports the concern that any cost overrun or delay could squeeze returns rather than break the story outright.
Bears also highlight concentration in premium OCTG and U.S. exposure. Here, Q2 does not close the file. Tubes EBITDA per tonne held at US$722, yet guidance already flags lower EBITDA per tonne in H2 as mix and Middle East freight weigh. That is a partial win for the cautious view on earnings volatility.
With Vallourec planning heavy 2026 payouts while funding Mine & Forest, offshore and New Energies, investors should verify how much balance sheet room is left.
