PC Connection stock barely flinched after earnings, slipping about 0.6% to US$82.49, yet the report itself landed with a lot more force than that move suggests. Heading into today, the stock had already climbed strongly over the past quarter, so expectations were not low.
The headline is simple. PC Connection posted record quarterly net sales of US$854.0m and record operating margin of 5.0%, with diluted earnings per share of US$1.31. The market reaction looked cautious. The earnings print looked more like a confident step up in profitability for an information technology reseller that typically trades on tight margins.

For investors who see PC Connection as a diversified, relatively stable IT solutions platform, the latest results lean in your favor. Net sales, gross profit and operating income all set quarterly records, and operating margin reached 5.0%. Enterprise and Business Solutions delivered double digit net sales growth with record backlogs, while Public Sector held steady with higher margins. Gross margin expanded and SG&A consumed a smaller share of sales, which points to a business model that is scaling efficiently across hardware, software, cloud and services.
Bears focused on margin pressure and working capital have some support too. Business Solutions gross margin eased by 50 basis points because of higher endpoint mix, which fits the concern about hardware heavy competition. Cash from operations for the first half was negative as inventory and receivables increased, so the strong income statement is not yet mirrored in cash generation. Public Sector net sales were roughly flat. That shows parts of the portfolio can tread water even while commercial customers are more active.
With net income rising while cash from operations for the first half runs negative, it is fair to ask how much balance sheet room PC Connection really has.
