Stepan (SCL) Stock Cools Even As Margin Repair Gains Force

Simply Wall St·07/30/2026 23:13:05
Listen to the news

Stepan stock slipped 1.6% to about US$65 even as the company delivered the kind of earnings print that usually cools bearish conviction rather than feeds it. Q2 net sales reached US$684.1m and adjusted earnings per share came in at US$1.18, supported by a sharp rebound in profitability.

The market appears focused on the modest pullback after a strong 90 day run and is treating this as a tidy quarter instead of a sentiment reset. The key development is margin repair, with adjusted EBITDA rising to US$74.4m and putting operating pressure rather than demand fear at the center of the story.

Stepan bull case hinges on cleaner, higher margin growth

Bulls argue Stepan can compound earnings as specialty volumes ramp, Pasadena contributes and Project Catalyst locks in structurally higher margins. Q2 goes a long way toward proving that. Adjusted EBITDA rose to US$74.4m with Surfactants EBITDA up 59% on 18% net sales growth, which points to meaningful margin repair rather than just pass through pricing. Organic volume growth in Surfactants of 7% and in Polymers of 5%, including roughly 3x spray foam volumes, supports the view that targeted end markets like insulation and oilfield are gaining traction. Management reports Pasadena at roughly 75% to 80% of target capacity and already ahead of expectations on tolling and logistics savings, which directly supports the specialty alkoxylation story. Project Catalyst run rate savings of about US$18m to US$20m per quarter, with a path to roughly US$22m, shows the cost program is tracking milestones, not just aspirational.

Bear case tests Stepan’s cash, cyclicality and one offs

The bear side worries that Stepan’s earnings recovery is fragile, flattered by temporary demand, working capital strain and restructuring noise. Q2 offers evidence for and against that concern. On the cautious side, free cash flow was a loss of US$15m as working capital built by about US$58m, and management acknowledged US$5m to US$10m of EBITDA benefit from customer pre buying tied to geopolitical and raw material fears. That supports the idea that some volume and margin strength may not repeat. Restructuring charges of US$75m to US$80m for Project Catalyst and a workforce reduction of around 100 salaried roles also underline that margin repair still relies on heavy lifting. At the same time, net leverage improved to 2.5x from 2.9x a year ago, and broad based volume gains across industrial cleaning, construction and oilfield suggest the rebound is not purely a cost cutting or pricing story.
