CONMED just handed short term traders a win. The stock jumped 8.7% to US$46.98 after Q2 numbers that put earnings, not revenue, in the spotlight. Adjusted earnings per share of US$1.38 and free cash flow of US$34.2 million gave the medtech company a cleaner profit story than recent headline margins implied.
For longer term investors, the real headline is the tension between that improving earnings power and a balance sheet that still carries meaningful debt. The rest of this report looks at how those two forces shape the multi year risk and reward profile for CONMED.

Bulls argue that CONMED’s shift toward higher margin surgical platforms and operational efficiencies will turn a modest top line into a stronger earnings and cash flow story. Q2 gives some support to that claim. Organic sales grew 6% after the GI exit, so the core portfolio is expanding even though reported revenue was almost flat. At the same time, adjusted EPS rose 20% and free cash flow reached US$34.2 million, helped by a tariff refund and cleaner supply chain execution.
The margin piece is central to the bullish view. Adjusted gross margin improved by about 300 basis points and management lifted full year EPS guidance while keeping organic growth expectations in the mid single digits. That combination is what the thesis calls for. A higher quality mix in general surgery and orthopedics, along with lower back orders, shows the margin and cash flow levers are at least starting to work as planned.
Access the analyst estimates for CONMED to see where the consensus models start to diverge on CONMED’s next few fiscal years and whether today’s seemingly settled price masks a very different multi year path. The cautious view on CONMED centers on high leverage, refinancing friction and only modest growth that could limit any upside from a potential sale. Q2 does not fully disprove that. Management did refinance and repurchase a large block of convertible notes, which reduces near term maturity risk, yet total debt still sits near US$834m with only US$37.3m of cash. Interest expense is guided to about US$33m for 2026, so the balance sheet remains a real constraint rather than a solved issue.
On growth, organic sales of 6% look healthier, but reported net sales were almost flat at US$343.5m and full year organic guidance was nudged down at the top end. AirSeal and orthopedics are gaining traction, yet AirSeal grew below internal expectations and U.S. orthopedics was flat. That mix of progress and shortfalls keeps the bears’ concerns about execution consistency and limited operating headroom largely in play.
