Pirelli (BIT:PIRC) Stock Faces Cash Flow Scrutiny After Margin Hold

Simply Wall St·07/30/2026 20:24:18
Listen to the news

Pirelli & C stock came into the Q2 print with a modest three month gain and a flat week, pricing in steady rather than spectacular progress. The earnings headline is margin resilience. Adjusted operating profit for the first half held at about €558m with a 16% margin, even as volumes in the standard tyre segment softened. At the same time net profit reached about €299m for the half, supported by lower financing costs. The market now has to decide whether this grip on profitability justifies a rerating, or whether recent strength already reflects that story.

Pirelli bull case hinges on premium mix and tech

Bulls argue that Pirelli can grow earnings by leaning on premium tyres, connected products like Cyber Tyre and tight cost control, even if standard volumes stay weak. The latest half year offers some support. High value now represents 82% of sales and H1 high value volumes grew while standard volumes fell as Pirelli deliberately pulled back in lower margin lines. Adjusted EBIT margin held at 16% despite softer overall volumes, helped by €50m of price and mix benefits and €81m of efficiencies that offset FX and inflation. Management reaffirmed a similar margin for the full year and kept guidance for net cash generation before dividends and the China call option at about €500m. Recent wins such as first Cyber Tyre fitment on the Pagani Utopia and fresh P Zero EV focused homologations show the connected and premium thesis moving from concept into early commercial deployment.

Bear case focuses on cash strain, tariffs and concentration

The bear argument is that Pirelli’s premium and tech focus brings concentration risk, heavy capex and exposure to tariffs and FX that could eat into cash and margins. There are some pressure points. H1 operating cash flow was negative €416m versus a positive figure a year earlier, with higher capex of €177m and the China JV call option pushing net financial position to about €1.92b. Q2 revenue fell 5.2% year on year and standard volumes dropped double digits, so dependence on premium and luxury OEM demand is increasing. At the same time, margin resilience and confirmed guidance for around 16% EBIT margin and around €500m net cash generation before dividends suggest inflation, FX and tariff costs are currently contained. Trade and governance noise around U.S. tariffs and Chinese ownership remains unresolved, so key bear worries are not cleared even if they are not yet visible in margin compression.
