IBM said on Thursday that its research shows that quantum computers have reached the “quantum advantage” stage — that is, quantum computers can perform computational tasks that exceed the capabilities of traditional computers, and that these results can be verified in strict ways. The findings mark a step towards practical application of this emerging technology, and the findings were published in three papers jointly completed by IBM and its research partners. Partners include the University of Chicago, RIKEN, and quantum computing software companies Qedma, BlueQubit, and AlgorithmIQ. Jay Gambetta, head of IBM's research department, said: “We have entered an era of quantum superiority. Scientists can count on this result. At present, the focus has moved from simply benchmarking systems to using these systems to carry out scientific research and explore practical applications.”
