Dresden, the capital of the German state of Saxony, is Europe's largest information and communication technology and microelectronics center. It is known as the “Saxon Silicon Valley,” and every 3 chips produced in Europe is labeled “Made in Saxony.” Many industry-leading companies, such as Bosch, Grofond, Infineon, and Indna, have semiconductor manufacturing plants in Dresden. According to data from the Saxony State Statistics Office, the total sales of the semiconductor industry in Saxony will be close to 4 billion euros in 2024, accounting for about 5% of the total turnover of the manufacturing industry. Recently, Infineon opened the “Smart Power Fab”, a large-scale intelligent power semiconductor factory in Dresden. It mainly uses 300mm wafer production technology to manufacture semiconductor products for AI data center power supply, renewable energy, power grids, and autonomous vehicles. With a total investment of 5 billion euros, the plant is the largest single investment in Infineon's history and one of Germany's largest industrial investment projects in recent years. Of this, about 1 billion euros were jointly funded by the European Union, the German federal government, and the state of Saxony. According to reports, the plant took only 3 years to complete and was put into operation earlier than originally planned. The new plant will create 1,000 direct jobs and double the production capacity of Infineon's Dresden site.
