What Happened?

Shares of specialty insurance provider Kinsale Capital Group (NYSE:KNSL) jumped 4.8% in the afternoon session after the company reported second-quarter 2026 results that surpassed Wall Street's expectations. The company posted adjusted earnings of $5.54 per share, beating the consensus forecast of $5.11. Revenue also impressed, coming in at $548.5 million, which was nearly 15% higher than analysts' estimates of $477.3 million.

Kinsale's strong performance was driven by solid underwriting results, reflected in a combined ratio of 75.5%, which was better than the 77.8% anticipated by analysts. The combined ratio is a key measure of profitability for insurers, with a lower figure indicating greater efficiency. While most metrics were strong, the company's book value per share of $89.34 slightly missed expectations, though the significant top- and bottom-line beats ultimately fueled positive investor sentiment.

The shares closed the day at $348.75, up 5% from the previous close.

What Is The Market Telling Us

Kinsale Capital Group’s shares are somewhat volatile and have had 11 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The biggest move we wrote about over the last year was 9 months ago when the stock dropped 8.1% on the news that its third-quarter results, while strong, failed to meet the market's lofty expectations. The company reported impressive results for the third quarter, with revenue of $497.5 million and adjusted earnings per share of $5.21, beating analysts' expectations by 10.9% and 8%, respectively. Revenue grew 19% year-over-year, driven by a 17.8% increase in net premiums earned. However, despite the strong top- and bottom-line performance, the company's book value per share of $80.19 came in slightly below consensus estimates. For a highly-valued stock like Kinsale, even minor blemishes can trigger a sell-off, and it appears investors were expecting a flawless report.

Kinsale Capital Group is down 11.1% since the beginning of the year, and at $348.75 per share, it is trading 27.2% below its 52-week high of $478.99 from October 2025. Despite the year-to-date decline, investors who bought $1,000 worth of Kinsale Capital Group’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $2,039.
