Seagate Technology Holdings PLC (NASDAQ:STX) stock traded lower on Friday. The downswing stems from a broad market sell-off across global semiconductor and technology hardware stocks. Nasdaq futures are up 0.18% while S&P 500 futures have gained 0.27%.
The sector-wide decline followed disappointing earnings results from prominent technology firms earlier in the week.
The market pressure intensified after overnight crashes in South Korean chipmakers, including SK Hynix Inc (NASDAQ:SKHY).
Investors are pulling profits and trimming positions to mitigate risk ahead of Seagate’s upcoming fourth quarter of 2026 earnings report, scheduled for Tuesday.
Analysts estimate earnings per share of $5.04 and quarterly revenue of $3.48 billion.
Wall Street adopted a defensive stance on high-flying artificial intelligence trades following disappointing updates on Thursday from mega-cap technology companies.
Among those updates, Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) repurchased no stock in the first quarter or second quarter of 2026 after spending $28.31 billion on buybacks during the comparable 2025 period.
Alphabet increased its 2026 capital expenditures outlook to between $195 billion and $205 billion to support AI infrastructure, which pushed its second quarter free cash flow to negative $5.86 billion.
Management noted on its earnings call that technical-infrastructure investment would continue pressuring free cash flow.
Simultaneously, Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) reported second-quarter adjusted earnings per share of 33 cents, missing the consensus estimate of 50 cents.
Tesla reported revenue of $28.23 billion and deliveries of 480,126 vehicles. Following the report on Thursday morning, Tesla stock fell 7.76% to $344.97.
The combined capital allocation shifts and earnings misses have prompted caution across the hardware sector, weighing directly on Seagate stock ahead of its earnings report.
STX remains in a strong longer-term uptrend, trading about 28% above its 100-day SMA ($695.65) and roughly 78% above its 200-day SMA ($500.62), which keeps the bigger picture tilted bullish despite the premarket dip. In the near term, it’s only modestly above the 20-day SMA ($878.33) and 50-day SMA ($886.61), so the stock doesn’t have much "cushion" if selling pressure builds.
Momentum is neutral: RSI at 52.90 suggests the move isn’t stretched to an overbought or oversold extreme.
STX Stock Price Activity: Seagate Technology shares were down 3.54% at $881 during premarket trading on Friday, according to Benzinga Pro data.
