Why ASX 200 gold stocks Regis Resources and Newmont are grabbing headlines on Friday

S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) gold stocks Regis Resources Ltd (ASX: RRL) and Newmont Corp (ASX: NEM) are making headlines today following the release of strong quarterly results.

Despite those results, both miners are trading in the red today amid escalating attacks in the Middle East.

Newmont shares are down 0.1% at time of writing, trading for $136.71 apiece, while Regis Resource shares are down a steeper 4.7% at $6.05 each.

For some context the ASX 200 is down 0.4% at this same time while the S&P/ASX All Ordinaries Gold Index (ASX: XGD) also down 2.9%. Gold is currently trading for US$4,049 per ounce, according to data from Bloomberg.

Now here's what the gold mining giants just reported.

Newmont shares slide despite earnings leap

Newmont reported a big earnings boost for the June quarter, with higher realised gold prices offsetting a decline in production.

Over the three months, the ASX 200 gold stock produced 1.2 million ounces of the yellow metal, down 14.3% year on year.

But with the average realised gold price Newmont received rising to US$4,414 per ounce, quarterly sales of US$6.12 billion were up 15.1% year on year.

As for the earnings boost, the miner reported adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) of $3.76 billion, up 25% from the 2025 June quarter.

This also translated to higher free cash flow, which came in at for the half year was US$5.35 billion for the half year, up 83%.

Also on the rise were costs. The company's all-in sustaining costs (AISC) of US$1,938 per ounce in the June quarter were up 21.7% from last year.

ASX 200 gold stock Regis Resources amasses record cash and gold hoard

For the June quarter Regis Resources reported gold production of 101,500 ounces. That brings the miner's full year FY 2026 gold production to 379,000 ounces.

Regis' AISC for FY 2066 came out to $2,945 per ounce.

Over the three months to 30 June, the ASX 200 gold stock sold 102,400 ounces of the yellow metal, receiving an average realised price of $6,241 per ounce. Regis achieved an operating cash flow of $376 million.

The company also notched a new record, reporting an all-time high cash and bullion holding of $1.18 billion as at 30 June.

Commenting on the results, Regis Resources CEO Jim Beyer said, "The June quarter capped off a very strong year for Regis, with both Duketon and Tropicana finishing FY26 well."

He added:

Group gold production of 101,500 ounces for the quarter lifted full year production to 379,000 ounces, the top end of our guidance range. And, importantly, we again delivered safely and within all of our material guided group cost and capital measures.

Looking to what could impact Regis Resources shares in the year ahead, Beyer concluded, "We see this strong production performance continue into FY27 with further improvement reflected in our higher production guidance."

The ASX 200 gold stock provided FY 2026 gold production guidance between 360,000 ounces and 400,000 ounces.
