Astral Resources Insiders Still AU$42k Away From Original Investment Value

Listen to the news

Insiders who bought AU$140.0k worth of Astral Resources NL (ASX:AAR) stock in the last year have seen some of their losses recouped as the stock gained 17% last week. The purchase, however, has proven to be a pricey bet, with losses currently totalling AU$42k.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Astral Resources Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The MD & Executive Director Marc Ducler made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for AU$100k worth of shares at a price of AU$0.20 each. So it's clear an insider wanted to buy, even at a higher price than the current share price (being AU$0.14). It's very possible they regret the purchase, but it's more likely they are bullish about the company. In our view, the price an insider pays for shares is very important. Generally speaking, it catches our eye when insiders have purchased shares at above current prices, as it suggests they believed the shares were worth buying, even at a higher price.

While Astral Resources insiders bought shares during the last year, they didn't sell. The chart below shows insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year. By clicking on the graph below, you can see the precise details of each insider transaction!

Insider Ownership

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Astral Resources insiders own about AU$17m worth of shares. That equates to 6.9% of the company. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.

So What Do The Astral Resources Insider Transactions Indicate?

There haven't been any insider transactions in the last three months -- that doesn't mean much. But insiders have shown more of an appetite for the stock, over the last year. Overall we don't see anything to make us think Astral Resources insiders are doubting the company, and they do own shares. While it's good to be aware of what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision.
