US President Donald Trump on Thursday welcomed the latest promises made by power companies and data center developers to require tech companies to bear the electricity costs required to run energy-intensive artificial intelligence systems. “Data centers and artificial intelligence are driving up electricity demand dramatically. “The cost of building new infrastructure to meet this demand should be borne by companies themselves, not American consumers,” Trump said at an event. The event aims to promote additional participants in its “Power User Protection Pledge” launched earlier this year. This initiative is not legally binding. Trump said, “Under this pioneering plan, America's largest technology company has officially promised to fund or build all the energy infrastructure needed to meet its new electricity needs. At the same time, we will allow them to build their own power plants.”
