Tesla CEO Elon Musk left the possibility on Wednesday for the electric car maker to merge with his other company, SpaceX, which is valued at more than a trillion dollars. He did not rule out this possibility and pointed out that the area of overlap between the two companies is growing. “As you can see from the many collaborations between Tesla and SpaceX in many fields, there is more and more overlap between the two sides,” Musk said during Tesla's earnings call. “We can't discuss corporate mergers or the like during the earnings call,” he added. “This must be done through proper procedures.” Investors and analysts have long speculated about the possibility of a merger between Musk's electric vehicle company and space companies, and discussions intensified during SpaceX's record $75 billion initial public offering. After Musk made these remarks, he asked Tesla General Counsel Earhart to speak. The latter only used cliché, saying SpaceX was a “great partner” and provided “many beneficial deals.” Munster, managing partner of Tesla investor Deepwater Asset Management, said the call made him even more convinced that the two companies are bound to merge within the next few years.
