AMD (AMD.US) is steadily competing for the AI chip market! After joining hands with Microsoft to expand cooperation, Anthropic won a multi-billion dollar order

The Zhitong Finance App learned that AMD (AMD.US) and Anthropic announced on Wednesday that the two sides have reached a multi-billion dollar chip and investment cooperation agreement. According to the agreement, Anthropic will begin deploying up to 2 gigawatts (GW) of AMD MI450 artificial intelligence accelerators in the first half of 2027. The Claude AI model developer will use AMD's Helios rack-scale solutions, which include the MI455X GPU, the AMD EPYC Venice CPU-powered platform, Pensando networking solutions, and ROCM software. Additionally, AMD said it will invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic in the future.

AMD Chairman and CEO Su Zifeng said in a statement: “We are very excited to be deepening our partnership with Anthropic and deploying AMD Helios on a gigawatt scale. This partnership combines Anthropic's leading position in cutting-edge artificial intelligence with the full power of AMD's high-performance computing. Together, the two sides will accelerate the large-scale application of artificial intelligence and promote Helios as an important platform for the next generation of AI infrastructure.”

Tom Brown, co-founder and chief computing officer of Anthropic, said: “Access to computing resources is critical to keeping Claude at the cutting edge of artificial intelligence and meeting customer needs. Through a full-stack partnership with AMD, we are ensuring that the required computing power is obtained and optimized for training and running Claude models. Operating across diverse hardware platforms allows us to match the most suitable hardware for different workloads.”

Additionally, AMD is discussing financial support for Anthropic's future data center leases, as reported by the media, citing sources familiar with the matter. Su Zifeng revealed that AMD also signed an engineering cooperation agreement with Anthropic. Under the agreement, AMD will use Anthropic's Claude artificial intelligence model to enhance the performance of its chip technology.

It is worth mentioning that AMD has also recently expanded chip cooperation with Microsoft (MSFT.US). AMD announced that the company and Microsoft will expand the scope of cooperation to cover AMD's GPU, CPU, network technology and software ecosystem, and will further integrate related technologies on the Microsoft Azure platform. Microsoft will deploy AMD Helios rack-scale solutions to provide cutting-edge AI model inference capabilities for Microsoft itself and its AI customers, and support Azure AI services. The two companies said that Microsoft Azure will also add two new virtual machine (VM) series products based on AMD EPYC CPUs and expand the deployment scale of Pensando data processing units (DPUs).

AMD said the Helios solution integrates the Instinct MI455X GPU, AMD EPYC Venice CPU, Pensando network technology, and ROCM software into an open, integrated rack-scale platform designed for large-scale AI training and inference tasks. Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella said, “Through our partnership with AMD Helios, we are expanding our Azure infrastructure product portfolio to provide customers with the performance, scale, and choice needed to build and run the next generation of AI applications.”
