Chaowei Semiconductor has reached an agreement with Anthropic to sign an artificial intelligence server purchase agreement worth tens of billions of dollars. The deal will reinforce AMD's competitive edge to catch up with industry leader Nvidia, while providing Anthropic with much-needed computing power resources. According to the terms of the agreement, Anthropic can purchase AMD next-generation Instinct MI450 chips with up to 2 gigawatts of total computing power starting in the first half of 2027. AMD will also invest up to 5 billion US dollars in Anthropic. This is the first time AMD has invested in this AI company, and the implementation of the investment will be linked to the agreed computing power deployment target. AMD CEO Su Zifeng said, “We are very interested in being deeply involved in the construction of its computing power infrastructure.” At the same time, she revealed that the engineering teams of the two sides have been carrying out joint research and development for some time. Anthropic currently uses chips from multiple vendors to carry computing power tasks, including Google Tensor processors, Amazon Trainium chips, and Nvidia graphics processors. Su Zifeng said that according to this cooperation arrangement, on the one hand, Anthropic will purchase AMD chips and deploy its own data center, and on the other hand, it will also lease some computing power resources through large cloud vendors and AI computing power new cloud service providers.
