Zhitong Finance learned that on Tuesday, the non-ferrous metals sector generally rose, with Century Aluminum (CENX.US) rising more than 6%, Southern Copper (SCCO.US) and McMorland Copper (FCX.US) rising more than 4%, BHP Billiton (BHP.US) rising more than 2%, and Rio Tinto (RIO.US) rising more than 1%. According to the news, the US White House announced on July 20 that US President Trump signed a notice on the same day to provide preferential import tariffs on raw aluminum to companies investing in raw aluminum production projects in the US in accordance with section 232 of the 1962 Trade Expansion Act, etc.

The announcement stated that the US Department of Commerce will establish a mechanism to encourage investment in the construction, expansion or renovation of aluminum smelters in the US. Eligible projects require a commitment to commence construction by January 20, 2029. The US Department of Commerce will allow the company hosting the project to import the same amount of primary aluminum as the expected annual output of the new project every year, and pay import tariffs by half in accordance with section 232 of the 1962 Trade Expansion Act.
