Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with ASEAN Secretary General Gao Jinhong in Manila on the 21st. Wang Yi said that China has always insisted on the equality of all countries, large and small, and has always pursued a policy of good neighborliness and friendship with neighboring countries. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia. China was the first major country to join the treaty, which encouraged other major powers to join one after another, and strongly enhanced ASEAN's international status. China will continue to support ASEAN community-building and ASEAN's unity and self-improvement. China is the most important anchor of stability in the region. We are willing to strengthen cooperation with ASEAN, deepen mutual trust, mutual understanding, and mutual support, safeguard the common interests of China and ASEAN, safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of the global South, and push the international order in a more just and rational direction. Wang Yi said that the South China Sea is the common home of countries in the region, and the South China Sea issue should not become an obstacle to the relationship between China and ASEAN. Some Philippine military and police forces are deliberately provoking and creating maritime incidents, serving the interests of external forces and undermining the process of improving Sino-Philippine relations and the peace and stability of the South China Sea. Countries in the region should be highly vigilant. China is ready to eliminate disruptive factors, speed up negotiations on the “Code of Conduct in the South China Sea”, jointly create a new narrative of peace, stability, cooperation and friendship in the South China Sea, and firmly seize the initiative on the South China Sea issue into its own hands.
