On July 21, the General Office of the Ministry of Civil Affairs released the “National First Batch of Typical Cases of Marriage and Funeral Customs Reform”, which covers 20 local practices across the country and will provide a model for further deepening the reform of marriage and funeral customs in all regions. In the marriage customs reform case in Hejian City, Hebei Province, the local community built a joint platform for marriage reform at the city, township, and village levels based on common governance at the grassroots level to guide 639 villages across the city to include “new marriage, limit expensive bride gifts, and encourage zero bride gifts” into village regulations; create full-cycle services covering marriage, marriage, and life after marriage; and reshape the “spiritual core” of marriage using diverse welfare activities as a medium. Today, local “low bride price, zero bride price” has become mainstream, and the average cost of a wedding reception has been reduced by more than 60%.
