According to people familiar with the matter, Andy Burnham is drawing up a plan to expand the Ministry of Commerce and re-establish Jonathan Reynolds as the British Secretary of Commerce. On Friday, in a speech announcing his official inauguration as the new leader of the British Labour Party, Burnham stated that he would implement a “pro-business” policy. He said that the cabinet team list has not yet been finalized, but his party colleagues said that the framework for the core leadership has basically taken shape. After the 2024 general election, Reynolds served as Minister of Commerce in Sir Kiel Stammer's cabinet until the cabinet reshuffle in September last year, where he was transferred flat to the position of party leader. A number of Labor Party figures and business representatives said that Reynolds is likely to be reinstated; he was well recognized by trade union leaders and some business executives during his tenure as Minister of Commerce. Reynolds has confessed to many that he is not suited to the job of party leader. If he returns to the post of Minister of Commerce, he may be given more powers and responsibilities relating to energy and technology policies.
