The European Prosecutor's Office announced on the 16th that 22 people, including 4 current members of the Greek Parliament and several former senior public officials, were prosecuted in Athens on the same day on suspicion of EU agricultural subsidy fund fraud. Among them, 3 members of parliament were charged with abetting the crime of misuse of trusts, and 1 member of parliament was charged with abetting the illegal management of EU funds. At the same time, one of the 4 people mentioned above was also charged with attempted computer fraud and abetting the issuance of false certificates. According to the prosecution, this is a large-scale organized fraud case. The officials involved are suspected of using illegal methods such as falsifying documents to assist in the illegal distribution of EU agricultural subsidies to ineligible beneficiaries. The amount involved may be as high as hundreds of millions of euros. If convicted, the defendant faces up to 5 years in prison and a fine. In June 2025, five senior Greek government officials, including then-Minister of Immigration and Asylum Marquis Volides, resigned on suspicion of issuing EU agricultural subsidy payments to ineligible Greek farmers through falsification of documents. In April of this year, the Greek government was reshuffled again due to the EU agricultural subsidy scandal.
