Listen to the news

Even if it's not a huge purchase, we think it was good to see that Edward Stenger, the Independent Director of Team, Inc. (NYSE:TISI) recently shelled out US$80k to buy stock, at US$16.00 per share. While that isn't the hugest buy, it actually boosted their shareholding by 51%, which is good to see.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Team

Notably, that recent purchase by Edward Stenger is the biggest insider purchase of Team shares that we've seen in the last year. So it's clear an insider wanted to buy, even at a higher price than the current share price (being US$15.62). While their view may have changed since the purchase was made, this does at least suggest they have had confidence in the company's future. To us, it's very important to consider the price insiders pay for shares. It is generally more encouraging if they paid above the current price, as it suggests they saw value, even at higher levels.

Over the last year, we can see that insiders have bought 10.33k shares worth US$168k. On the other hand they divested 4.12k shares, for US$71k. In total, Team insiders bought more than they sold over the last year. You can see the insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year depicted in the chart below. Insider Ownership Of Team

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. From our data, it seems that Team insiders own 5.6% of the company, worth about US$4.0m. Whilst better than nothing, we're not overly impressed by these holdings.

So What Do The Team Insider Transactions Indicate?

The recent insider purchase is heartening. We also take confidence from the longer term picture of insider transactions. However, we note that the company didn't make a profit over the last twelve months, which makes us cautious. While the overall levels of insider ownership are below what we'd like to see, the history of transactions imply that Team insiders are reasonably well aligned, and optimistic for the future. In addition to knowing about insider transactions going on, it's beneficial to identify the risks facing Team. Every company has risks, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for Team (of which 1 is a bit unpleasant!) you should know about.
