The Zhitong Finance App learned that Meta Platforms (META.US) will spend more than $10 billion to build a data center in El Paso (El Paso), Texas. This amount is a significant increase from previous forecasts and is the latest in a series of major investments the company has made around the infrastructure needed to support its artificial intelligence (AI) ambitions.

Meta promised $1.5 billion investment when it first announced the data center, but the company said in a blog post on Thursday it would increase the investment. Meta said the gigawatt data center is expected to be put into use in 2028 and will provide more than 300 on-site jobs after completion. Meta also said that as investment increases, its construction demand will also grow, and it is expected that 4,000 temporary workers will be on site during peak construction periods.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has promised to invest heavily in the data centers, computing power, and talent needed to compete in the rapidly evolving AI competition. This year alone, Meta expects capital expenditure of up to $135 billion, focusing on AI infrastructure projects. Zuckerberg has promised to invest another hundreds of billions of dollars in AI infrastructure projects before the end of this decade.

Meanwhile, Meta is rapidly expanding the size of its data centers, and more than 30 data centers are already in operation or under construction. Many of its new projects are expected to have a capacity of at least 1 gigawatt, enough to power around 750,000 homes.
