SailPoint, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:SAIL) price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 8.9x might make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the Software industry in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios below 4.4x and even P/S below 1.9x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

Recent revenue growth for SailPoint has been in line with the industry. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to improve, justifying the currently elevated P/S. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 23%. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 84% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing revenue over that time.
Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 20% as estimated by the analysts watching the company. With the industry predicted to deliver 33% growth, the company is positioned for a weaker revenue result.
With this information, we find it concerning that SailPoint is trading at a P/S higher than the industry. It seems most investors are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects, but the analyst cohort is not so confident this will happen. There's a good chance these shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.
Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
It comes as a surprise to see SailPoint trade at such a high P/S given the revenue forecasts look less than stellar. The weakness in the company's revenue estimate doesn't bode well for the elevated P/S, which could take a fall if the revenue sentiment doesn't improve. Unless these conditions improve markedly, it's very challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
