According to a report by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation on the 8th, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will visit China next week to discuss trade, energy, and security issues with China. If successful, this will be the first time a Canadian prime minister has visited China since 2017. The Canadian media believe that this visit is of great significance in an attempt to repair Canada-China relations. Canada's agriculture department is looking forward to Carney's visit to China to ease trade tension. Canada's “Global News” commented: “For farmers in Saskatchewan, this trip really looked forward to the stars and the moon.” The Canadian Prime Minister's Office said on the 7th that Carney will leave for a visit to China on January 13 to meet with senior Chinese officials and business leaders. The main goal is to “enhance cooperation between the two sides in the fields of trade, energy, agriculture, and international security.” According to Canadian media, the visit comes at a time when Canadian agricultural producers are struggling to deal with China's imposition of “countervailing tariffs” on exports of rapeseed oil, pork, and seafood, and anti-dumping investigations on rapeseed. Prior to that, Canada was on par with the US and imposed tariffs on electric vehicles, steel, and aluminum products made in China. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reports that Carney said in a statement that the disruption in global trade prompted the Canadian government to transform the economy from an “economy that relies on a single trading partner” to an “economy that is stronger and more resistant to global shocks.” Carney also said, “We are building new partnerships in energy and trade, attracting significant new investments and creating more opportunities for Canadians.”
