Germany succeeded in reducing harmful carbon dioxide emissions last year, but this was mainly due to continued weakness in its industry, rather than efforts to pursue clean technology. As Europe's largest economy, Germany is struggling to recover from years of hardship. Previously, its gross domestic product declined in both 2023 and 2024, and only narrowly avoided a recession in 2025. According to estimates by climate think tank Agora Energiewende, German manufacturers have reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 11 million tons compared to 2024. Overall emissions in Germany fell by 9 million tons to 640 million tons, but higher polluting emissions from the construction and transport sector slowed overall progress. Cold weather was a factor supporting the increase in emissions in 2025, as it boosted heating demand, leading to a 3.2% increase in building emissions. Transportation sector emissions increased 1.4% due to slow adoption of electric vehicles.
